Finding My Direction

Several years ago, I found myself at the bottom of a staircase similar to this one. My staircase was in my soul. I was lying at the bottom tattered and torn in so many ways; not knowing how to even get up let alone go to the next step. I want to share with you one of the ways I was able to get up and start climbing to freedom.

I was searching for answers to all my "Why’s" and attended a retreat which included Spiritual Direction. Well that was exactly what I needed. So I went; ready to gain all the answers that I was so desperate to know. Surely my life would get back on track after an experience like what the brochure had outlined. Yes, my life did get on track, for the first time in my life.

I was not sure what Spiritual Direction was – my thoughts went to gurus and monks and other such people of higher thought. My Director for that weekend was a nun, Sister Jane. I was expecting a stern woman in a full habit and a Bible in one hand and a ruler in the other. When I arrived at The Spiritual Ministry Retreat Center in San Diego California, I was welcomed into the retreat house by a warm hospitable woman in shorts and a t-shirt. Imagine my surprise when she introduced herself as ‘Sister Jane’. My life would never be the same.

I learned that Spiritual Direction was unlike anything I could have imagined. It is a relationship between the Directee and the Divine that is facilitated by the Director. The Director is trained in the art of listening and helps the Directee to hear the promptings of the Divine and notice how it is working and present in his/her life.

This experience had such a profound effect on me that I am now a Certified Spiritual Director. This training has opened my mind, my heart and my soul to Divine and to the great things that have been purposed for me.

If this is something that interests you, even a little bit, I invite you to contact me for more information and further discussion. You can also get more information from Spiritual Directors International (www.sdiworld.org).

Namaste,

Bridgette Goldstein
